Semrush vs Pay-as-You-Go SEO Research
Compare a Semrush-style monthly plan with paying per lookup. How each billing model works, who it suits, and a simple way to check which costs you less.
This is not a contest between two tools. It is a comparison of two ways to pay for SEO research, and the right one depends on how you work. We make DataFlowSEO, which is pay as you go, so we will say where the other model wins.
We have not listed prices. Semrush and similar tools change their plans, so look at the vendor's pricing page for today's numbers.
How a monthly plan works
You pay every month, or every year at a lower monthly rate, and get an allowance: a number of projects, tracked keywords, reports and so on. The allowance usually resets each period. If you use less than your allowance, the rest is gone. If you need more, you move up a plan or buy extras.
How pay as you go works
You add credit to your balance. A research lookup uses some of it when the lookup completes. There is no monthly reset. The balance stays until you spend it. Failed requests are free, and so is reopening anything you have already saved.
Three people, three answers
The full-time specialist. Runs reports daily for many sites. A plan can be cheaper per lookup, and a large suite with many features suits this person well.
The freelancer with uneven months. Four client audits in March, one in April, none in May. A plan costs the same in all three months. Credit would have been spent only in the busy one.
The small business owner. Needs a keyword check before each blog post and an audit twice a year. Pay as you go matches that. A plan is mostly unused.
Do the maths on your own numbers
You do not need a spreadsheet of guesses. Do this instead:
- Look back at the last three months and write down what research you ran each month.
- Open the vendor's pricing page and see which plan covers that work.
- In DataFlowSEO, each lookup shows its price before you run it. Add up what the same work would have cost.
- Compare the three months side by side. If your usage is steady, the plan may win. If it swings, credit may.
What you give up with pay as you go
- A smaller set of tools: ten, covering keywords, domains, competitors, backlinks, rank tracking, audits, content briefs, local SEO, brand monitoring and AI visibility
- The "all you can eat" feeling. You see a price per lookup, which is a plus for some people and an annoyance for others
- Availability: we serve customers in India today and are working on going global
What you gain
- No monthly commitment
- Credit that never expires
- Every client's results saved in a project and free to reopen
- An MCP connection, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can answer from your saved research
