Backlink analysis

See who links to a site, what changed since last time, which links look risky, and where competitors have the edge.

8 min read

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours, and one of the strongest signals in search. This tool shows who links to a site, how healthy that profile looks, what changed since you last looked, and which links deserve attention.

Run an analysis

  1. Open Backlinks

Choose it in the left sidebar.

  2. Enter a target

A domain, subdomain or exact URL.

  3. Choose the scope and link status

Live links are active now, Lost links have disappeared and All links shows both. Choose whether to include subdomains or look at the root domain only.

  4. Check the price, then run it

The Analyze button shows what a fresh analysis is expected to cost. An analysis you already ran opens free, so the price only applies to a new one. You can leave the page while it runs, and it will be waiting when you return.

The overview

Illustration with sample data
CardMeaning
Link profile healthOur own quick rating of the link profile (a DataFlowSEO heuristic that weighs diversity, dofollow share, spam and broken links). Use it as a prompt to look closer, not as a Google metric.
Backlinks and Referring domainsTotal links to the target, and how many different sites they come from. Each shows the change since the previous version.
Domain rankHow strong the domain's overall authority looks, on a scale of 0 to 100.
Dofollow linksThe share of links that pass authority.
Broken backlinksLinks that point to pages that no longer load, which is link value going to waste.
High-risk linksLinks our risk check scores 60 or more. Click it to open the Risk tab.

Below the cards, a chart follows your backlinks and referring domains across versions, and What is saved shows how many rows of each report you have so far.

The tabs

TabWhat you will find
OverviewThe cards, the trend across versions and how much of each report is saved.
BacklinksEvery saved link with its source page, anchor, authority, spam score and risk. Filter, search, sort and export.
Referring domainsThe sites that link to you, grouped by domain.
AnchorsThe link text others use, so you can spot over-optimised or odd anchors.
Linked pagesWhich of your pages attract the most links (not available for an exact URL).
New & lostCompare any two versions: what was gained, what was lost, and a recovery list. Also the optional 12-month history.
RiskWhich links and domains look unwanted, why, and a disavow file you can review.
CompetitorsSites with a similar link profile.
Link gapSites that link to your competitors, and whether they link to you.
Bulk analysisMeasure many domains or URLs side by side.

Tables, filters and importing more

Each report starts with the strongest rows available. A banner shows how many are loaded out of how many exist. Search, Filters (up to eight rules, read left to right), the quick-filter chips (Dofollow, Nofollow, New, Lost, Broken, High risk) and Export CSV all work on the rows already loaded, so they never cost anything. Click a column heading to sort; Shift-click adds a second level. Tick rows to export only those.

To widen what you can search and compare, use Import more (the next block) or Import all (up to 20,000 rows). You see the price first. Importing keeps going if you leave the page, with a progress count; Stop keeps everything imported so far, and running it again carries on where it stopped without paying for a page twice.

  1. Refresh to create a second version

Use Refresh next to the version badge (you see the price first), or switch on monitoring so it happens by itself.

  2. Open New & lost

Pick the version to compare with. You get the headline numbers side by side, and how many backlinks and referring domains are new, lost and kept.

  3. Work the recovery list

Lost lists the links that disappeared, strongest source first. The best ones are worth winning back.

Load history adds the last twelve months of new and lost backlinks per month. It is fetched once, shown with its price beforehand, and saved with the analysis.

Risk and the disavow file

Every saved backlink and referring domain gets a risk score from 0 to 100, worked out from data you already have, at no extra cost. It looks at the spam score, spammy anchor text (casino, pills, payday loans and similar), throw-away domain extensions, very low authority, source pages that no longer exist, and domains that link in bulk like a link farm. Nofollow links count for half, because they pass no authority. 60 or more is high risk.

The Risk tab shows the bands, the reasons seen most, the domains behind the riskiest links and the riskiest links themselves. Tick domains to disavow, or leave them all unticked to include every domain at or above the level you choose, then Download disavow.txt. The file lists one domain: line per site, never includes your own site, and is meant to be reviewed before you upload it in Google Search Console.

Enter competitor or comparison domains, one per line or separated by commas. You see the price and confirm before anything runs; it keeps going if you leave the page and is saved, so you can reopen it later from Saved runs to filter, sort and export, instead of paying again. Running the same targets again opens the saved result free.

A bulk run takes all seven measurements (rank, backlinks, spam score, referring domains, new and lost backlinks, new and lost domains, pages) and keeps them together under one saved run.

Monitoring

Monitor this target analyses it again every week or month and saves each check as a new version. You choose a spending limit per check and when to be emailed: when this many links are lost, or this many new high-risk links appear. Nothing is spent when you switch it on; the first check runs one week or month later.

  • Each check uses credit like a manual analysis, and never more than your limit: if a check would cost more, it is skipped and monitoring pauses.
  • It also pauses on its own if your balance runs out or it fails three times in a row, and you are emailed. Saving the monitor turns it back on.
  • Stop it any time with Stop monitoring. Your saved versions stay.

What costs credit

ActionCost
Analyze a new target, or RefreshOne charge for the whole analysis (summary plus the report lists). Shown on the button.
Import more or Import allOne charge per block of rows, as each arrives. Price shown first.
Link gap or bulk analysisOne charge per measurement. Price shown first. Saved runs reopen free.
12-month historyTwo requests, once per analysis. Price shown first.
Monitoring checksLike a manual analysis, up to your limit.
Everything elseFree: opening any saved version, comparing versions, risk scores, the disavow file, filters, search, sorting and CSV export.

Prices are based on what similar requests cost recently, so the figure shown is a close guide. You are always charged for what the request actually used, once it completes. A request that is rejected, or that fails, costs nothing. If your balance cannot cover a request, it does not start.
